Mutual Fund Portfolio Review Beyond Fund Rankings

Owning many mutual funds does not necessarily mean being diversified. A sensible review looks beneath fund names to what the portfolio really holds.

THE DECISIONS THAT MATTER

What to examine before acting

Check overlap across schemes

Two funds can hold many of the same stocks or sectors despite different labels. Look at combined underlying exposure and whether each scheme plays a distinct role in the portfolio.

Compare performance in context

Evaluate benchmark fit, rolling outcomes, volatility and downside behavior over relevant periods. A single trailing one-year ranking can reward a strategy that may not fit the investor.

Account for costs and exit consequences

Expense ratios, exit loads and potential capital-gains tax matter to the net outcome. Any recommendation to consolidate or switch should calculate those frictions before acting.

A practical illustration

Illustrative review: six diversified equity funds might still share their largest holdings. An overlap table and allocation map can reveal more than the count of schemes.

What an advisory conversation should cover

01 · Understand

Goals, financial position, existing holdings, liabilities and tolerance for loss.

02 · Evaluate

Asset allocation, trade-offs, alternatives, costs and suitable implementation routes.

03 · Document and review

Clear recommendations and sensible review triggers as circumstances change.

Questions worth asking

Does more mutual funds mean more diversification?

Not necessarily. The funds may duplicate exposures, so the underlying holdings and portfolio weights matter.

Should I sell every underperforming scheme?

Not automatically. Review the mandate, appropriate benchmark, time horizon and costs before deciding.

Can SIPs remove market risk?

No. SIPs can spread purchase dates but do not remove market or capital-loss risk.
